Feline oral health is often overlooked, but it’s a vital part of your cat’s overall well-being. Many cats suffer silently from dental disease, experiencing pain, infection, and difficulty eating long before visible symptoms appear. At Missoula Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery, we specialize in identifying and treating even the most advanced feline dental problems with expertise and compassion, helping your cat live free from pain and oral disease.

If your cat is due for an oral exam or showing signs of dental trouble, we’re here to help. Schedule your cat’s dental evaluation today.

Common Oral Health Conditions in Cats

Although cats do a wonderful job hiding it, they are just as likely as dogs to experience oral health problems. Some of the most common dental issues that appear in cats include periodontal disease, resorptive disease, gingivostomatitis, and oral tumors.

Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is the most common dental problem in cats, ranging from mild gingivitis to advanced periodontitis. Plaque and tartar buildup lead to gum inflammation, bone loss, and painful infections. Untreated, it can result in tooth loss and even affect the heart, liver, and kidneys.

Watch for periodontal disease signs: bad breath, red or bleeding gums, drooling, difficulty eating, and pawing at the mouth.

Regular oral exams and cleanings are key to detecting and treating periodontal disease early, before it causes irreversible damage.

Tooth Resorption

Feline tooth resorption, also called feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions (FORLs), is a common and painful condition where a cat’s body begins breaking down its own tooth structure. Because these lesions often begin below the gumline, they’re invisible without dental radiographs.

Once detected, extraction of the affected tooth is usually the most effective way to relieve pain and prevent further damage. Annual oral exams with full-mouth X-rays are the best defense against this silent but progressive condition.

Gingivostomatitis

Feline gingivostomatitis is a severe, chronic inflammatory condition affecting a cat’s gums, tongue, and oral tissues. It causes redness, ulceration, and intense pain, often making it difficult for affected cats to eat or groom.

While the exact cause isn’t fully understood, an abnormal immune response to oral bacteria is thought to play a role. The most effective treatment is often surgical removal of teeth to reduce plaque retention. For refractory cases, anti-inflammatory or immunosuppressive therapies may be added to support recovery. Early diagnosis and aggressive management provide the best chance for remission and improved quality of life.

Oral Tumors

Oral tumors can range from benign growths to malignant cancers that threaten your cat’s health and quality of life. They may appear as lumps, ulcers, or swellings in the mouth. Early detection is critical for a positive outcome.

Our team uses cone-beam CT imaging for detailed surgical planning and precise diagnosis, allowing us to tailor each treatment approach, whether it involves surgical removal, radiation therapy, or a combination of both.
